Our Recommendations:
What does a happy cat need?

To help your cat feel comfortable from the very beginning, we have put together some recommendations. These products have proven themselves and ensure a species-appropriate, safe, and happy environment.

Nutrition

Nutrition:

  • Snacks: 1–3 small snacks per day.

  • Wet food: At least once in the morning and once in the evening.

  • Dry food: From around the age of one year, one tablespoon of dry food per cat per day is usually sufficient. During the growth phase (before the first birthday), a bit more is appropriate. However, dry food should always be a supplement to wet food and never the main meal.

💡 Tip: Offer wet food first and wait a moment before giving dry food. This ensures your cat eats the hydrating and healthier wet food first. Also, make sure to provide variety in the food bowl. For example, offer beef, chicken, veal, or fish, and avoid giving the same variety in the morning and evening. This provides a range of nutrients and keeps meals interesting. A tasty cat soup once a week also helps provide healthy hydration and adds even more variety.

  • Quality Criteria: The food should contain at least 60% meat, little or no grain, no sugar, and a low carbohydrate content. All ingredients should be clearly declared.

Important note on food choice: If you choose to feed your cat food that contains sugar or a high amount of grains, there is a significant risk that your cat will later reject healthy food! Such ingredients can quickly create a preference for less nutritious food, making the switch to healthier, balanced options much more difficult. Our recommended cat food brands can be found in the section “Where to buy?” below.

Food bowls:
Each cat should have at least one bowl for wet food. Dry food bowls can be shared if needed.

Water sources:
Each cat should have access to at least one water bowl or drinking fountain. It's recommended to place several water sources around the home, away from the food area, as many cats prefer to drink water separately from where they eat.

💡 Tip: Use shallow bowls, as they prevent your cat’s sensitive whiskers from touching the edges while eating or drinking. This ensures more comfort and a more relaxed feeding experience.

Litter Boxes and Cat Litter

Litter Box:
A covered litter box is recommended, as it helps keep the litter inside and minimizes odors.

If you have multiple cats or a busy schedule, investing in an automatic litter box is worth considering. These clean themselves automatically after your cat uses them, reduce odors, and save you time on daily maintenance.

There are many models available on the market today. Good devices start at around CHF 250.–, but depending on the brand and features, prices can exceed CHF 1,000.–.

Cat Litter:
For easier cleaning and better odor control, we recommend using clumping cat litter. Clumping litter has the advantage of effectively absorbing liquids and odors, making it much easier to keep the litter box clean. Our recommendations for cat litter brands can be found below in the section “Where to buy?”.

Scratching Posts and Climbing Options

Climbing Options:

Every cat should have access to a cat tree or a climbing wall, with at least one basket or cozy spot to rest.

Recommendation:
Choose a model that is stable, made preferably from natural materials, and offers multiple levels and hiding places. This allows your cat to satisfy its natural instincts — climbing, scratching, observing, and retreating.

You can also install multiple climbing elements on the wall to offer your cat more variety and movement, such as wall shelves, hammocks, or bridges.

Cats love observing the world from above, so elevated resting areas are ideal to give them a sense of safety and control over their territory.

Toys

Toys:
Provide a variety of toys, such as mice, play tracks, balls, or feather wands, to physically and mentally stimulate your cat.

Recommendation:
Use a mix of puzzle toys, interactive feather toys, balls, and toy mice to encourage your cat’s natural hunting instincts and prevent boredom. Automatic toys that move or trigger actions on their own are also a great addition, offering entertainment when you’re not available to play. Combine toys your cat can use alone with those you can play with together, like wand toys or laser pointers. Rotate toys regularly or hide some for a while to keep playtime exciting and fresh. Playing not only strengthens the bond between you and your cat but also helps reduce stress, improve fitness, and increase your cat’s overall happiness.
